The next stage of the building process: waterproofing the house

Houses 116 & 117 fascias & rooves are going on as I post.

The cavity system creates a space between the wrapped framework & the back of the cladding this space allows air movement and moisture to escape

A few details_
  • the presence of mold is reduced by ventilating the cavity space and thus lowering continual humidity
  • when working out spacing you must take exterior cladding fixing requirements & space the cavity battens to meet those requirements
  • timber battens must be treated to H3.2 unless the timber is primed or has isolating element like bituminous paper, best just to use H3.2 unless retrofitting
  • cavity battens are fixed to studs on top the the building paper: to allow vertical moisture runoff
  • if horizontal cavity blocks are used they must be fitted at a minimum slope of 5°
  • expanded or extruded polystyrene may be used instead of timber and glued to the building wrap

keeping it safe to lift our trusses

it was really important to ensure the site was made as safe as possible before erecting the trusses and roof structure. we placed mobile scaffold at 1 gable end & installed pipe & clip scaffold to the other 3 sides of our house:

and internally the 2 mobile & additional timber scaffolds ensured a safe working platform to move the trusses into position:

and finally once the trusses were secured scaffold planks placed across the truss bottom chords gave us an additional safe working platform from which we could complete the roof structure

Preventing uplift: top to bottom

now we've completed the structural elements of the house we can see how we tie the elements together vertically

Drawing 2 next Wednesday_15th Sept

Don't forget to get a scale rule, you'll need it for drawings for next Wednesday and from now on.

This is the sort of scale rule we use, don't buy an engineering scale rule with 1:15 scales on it: we builders don't use them.

We use the following scales_ 1:2, 1:5, 1:10, 1:20, 1:50, 1:100, 1:200....
